Happy 4th of July everyone! My Daily Muse column, “What to Read on the Subway,” is all about American history this week.

I so have to make one of these
I may be a grown woman, but I still love this DIY project: a calming jar tutorial that my friend Angel posted from Robyn Oakenfold’s blog. I love glitter. I don’t care what you say. I found this video from an art therapist, who also calls them “serenity jars.” OoOoooh.

International Day of Happiness
It’s Happiness Day all around the world! The UN has officially designated March 20th as the first International Day of Happiness. What are you going to do?
Love
Fell in love with the coolest paintings today. Finger paintings! Check out the gorgeous artwork from Iris Scott.
A fun discovery
Have you read anything from UC-Berkeley’s “Greater Good” center? Among their “core themes” of research and writing is happiness, as well as mindfulness and altruism. Explore here. Want something else fun to do this weekend? Take Keri Smith’s advice in the amazing How to Be An Explorer of the World and uncover a mystery:
Eoin Finn on Yoga
Just watched this funny & interesting interview with Eoin Finn of Blissology.com. If you haven’t seen his “hammock enlightenment” TEDx talk, it’s a lovely thing.
Quote of the Day
“One lives in the naïve notion that later there will be more room than in the entire past.”
—Elias Canetti, The Human Province
*From Gretchen Rubin’s Happier At Home, which has an *incredible* appendix of happiness readings (I take back everything I said in the last post about Rubin being more Type-A than me, for her happiness resources alone!) which have me searching my library catalog for fun books and contemplating more book buying.
Happy New Year!
I’m having a relaxing New Year’s Eve, reading and listening to jazz. I have some yoga penciled in, too. What are your plans?
What I’m reading today:
- Rosie Molinary on choosing a word for the year and setting an intention around it. I haven’t decided do this myself, but I’m thinking about it. What would your word be?
- The Greater Good Science Center’s article on resolutions that will make you happier.
Need an escape from the Mondays?
- My Daily Muse column for New Year’s Eve, “What to Read on the Subway,” is a virtual vacation to Paris! Check out some of my favorite books and podcasts, like Amy Thomas’ Paris, My Sweet.
Merry Christmas, everyone!
Wishing you a happy holiday.
